2017 Neighborhood Leadership Academy

UPDATE (Thursday, Aug. 17):

Application review is (still!) underway.
Thank you to all who have applied. Deciding among so many great ideas and neighborhood leaders is a time-consuming task for our staff and volunteer committee, but we are doing our best to complete decisions and send status updates along the way. Some invitations have been extended this week to accepted applicants, while other seats are still in the process of being filled over the next few days. Thank you for your patience!

Application is still open for waitlist opportunities
The Fall application period is closed. However, the application form is still available. If you have not yet applied and would like to be considered for a potential waiting list, please fill out an application and we will consider your application if/when opportunities arise. See link to application below.

Take your community higher

Completely revamped for 2017, the Neighborhood Leadership Academy is a free, eight-session program that empowers South Bend residents to make positive change in their communities.

Think of it as ‘boot camp’ for community organizing! The Academy will help you explore your ideas, create a plan for action, get local officials on your side, and build a valuable network.

What you’ll learn

Topics include:

  • Communicating your Vision
  • Recruiting & Building a Team
  • Influencing Local Government
  • Campaign Planning
  • Goal Setting & Project Management
  • Leading Effective Meetings
  • Finding and Using your Community’s Assets
  • …and more!

When it meets

The 2017 Academy launches Thursday, September 21, 2017 and meets eight evenings over three months. All sessions are Thursdays from 6:00 – 8:30 p.m.

Participants will be asked to attend scheduled sessions and take part in a final presentation of their team project. See the complete schedule.

Apply by July 29 August 6

UPDATE, August 8: Did you miss the deadline? The application is still available even though the deadline has passed. If you have not yet applied and would like to be considered for any waiting list, please apply and we will consider your application if opportunities arise.

The countdown is on, so apply now! To apply, have your ideas for a better community ready and visit our online application. (See sample application (PDF). For a paper application, please contact the NRC.)

Application decisions will be made beginning late July, and all applicants will be notified of status by early August. Accepted applicants must confirm their participation by returning the commitment form and completing a pre-assessment survey.
